It is a story bizarre of future fetched events in the life of a middle aged erudite woman, Millie, from that autumn late evening when she boarded the train for Kalka. Her experience on the 30-hour journey blew her composure, gradually at first and then implosively, stripping the last bit of control she had over herself.
In the two-passenger coupe, through her conversations with her co-traveler, she felt the man grow from seeming an ordinary person to being a sage unfathomable in her estimate. She had carried a book on Vedanta for casual occupation but the truths it presented raised the conflict of her life, more deep and urgent than she could deal with. The kernel of Vedanta thought in her contemplation turned real, without warning, and precipitated a sudden spiritual crisis of absolute proportion. It overwhelmed her into a frozen helplessness and rolled her balled up being in total surrender towards the man she barely knew, who was not above her suspicions just hours ago.
Millie’s relationship with her newfound Teacher cemented instantly, as if resumed from its long forgotten past. She followed him of her own accord to remote Kothi, a tiny village in Kinnaur, instead of vacationing with her niece in Shimla hills. It was time filled with joy and light, the kind she had never experienced before, and new introductions to people corporeal and beings divine who would be her lifelong associates. Everyday was a wondrous awakening into the reality of her own deathless and immortal being, of sublime Vedic truths and the Truth of all truths, and of the hidden Way sages and seers and mountain yogis had trod since times hoary.
Through those fast paced days, Millie discovered that one purpose in her future which had hovered over her while she had waited on the platform for the majestic Kalka Mail to roll into Durgapur station. The realisation did not just change her for ever but transformed her into eternity, the same of which creation projects and into which it annuls.
